Our History

In 2001 the Service Employees International Union ("SEIU") and the Candian Union of Public Employees ("CUPE") observed a lack of pension coverage in smaller, primarily female dominated workplaces.  Where retirement arrangements did exist they tended to be group RRSPs, often requiring only modest contributions and frequently voluntary in nature.

The unions set out to negotiate contributions to a Multi-Sector Pension Plan (MSPP) which was to be established.  The unions made application for registration as a Specified Multi-employer Pension Plan under the Income Tax Act and with the Ontario regulator concurrently.  Registration was received effective January 1, 2002.  The Pension Plan is registered with the Financial Services Commission of Ontario - Pension Plans Branch under the Pension Benefit Act, 1990.  The Pension Plan is exempt from tax under section 149 (o) of the Income Tax Act.
